AncestryDNA testing offers rich information about your ancestral heritage and genetic links. If you want to share your DNA results with family, friends, or researchers, Ancestry has safe methods of sharing access. Here’s how you can share your results effectively while keeping your data private and under your control.
How DNA Sharing Works?
AncestryDNA results are associated with the account on which registration was made. Although results cannot be moved from one account to another, they can be shared with others using an invitation system. The test owner (or the manager assigned) can invite others to see the results and grant varying levels of access.
Sharing DNA Results via Browser
- Sign in to your Ancestry account and navigate to Account Settings.
- Click on DNA under the left-hand menu.
- Choose the DNA test you wish to share.
- Scroll down to DNA Test Sharing and click Invite.
- Enter the email address or username of the recipient.
- Select an access level:
- Viewer: Able to view results but not change anything.
- Collaborator: Able to add notes, change participant information, and associate the test with a family tree.
- Manager: All power, including inviting others in and downloading DNA information.
- Click Invite to invite.

Sharing Ancestral Origins Only
If you prefer sharing just your ancestral origins without complete DNA results, there are several choices from Ancestry:
- Family and community groups
- Email or Ancestry messaging
- Social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, X, etc.)
- Copy a shareable link
- Download the ancestry report for offline sharing
Manage Shared Access
- To edit or remove access to your DNA results:
- Go to DNA Settings and find the DNA Test Sharing section.
- Under the Accepted and Pending tabs, choose a user to edit their role or take away access.
- Confirm changes to update permissions.
Final Thoughts
By controlling access to your AncestryDNA results carefully, you can work together effectively while keeping your genetic data safe. Sharing DNA results can be a valuable experience whether for research or reconnecting with relatives when done properly. Investing the time to learn about access levels and sharing will enable you to get the most out of your genetic findings.
